In 2021, Minneapolis, Minnesota based Jonny Pops LLC used Food Export-Midwest’s Branded Program to gain brand awareness for their fruit and cream bars in China. JonnyPops used their allocated Branded Program funds to ship product samples to prospective buyers. With these efforts, in February of 2022, JonnyPops reported significant sales of $85,000 to China with projected sales over $400,000 over the next twelve months. The company also gained 3 new foreign buyer contacts and establishing 3 new distributorships. This sale to China also marks a first-time sale to the market for the Minnesota supplier!

The Minnesota supplier continued to focus expanding their market share to China in 2022. The company used Food Export-Midwest’s Branded Program again to promote their ice cream novelty products by shipping samples to potential buyers in the country. These efforts helped them gain a significant increase in sales to China and they have already applied for Branded Program funding for 2023 to continue to expand their market share.

JonnyPops was founded in a St. Olaf College dorm room and sold its first pops at Twin Cities farmers’ markets and local cafes in 2012. Today, JonnyPops employs 80 people, and their products are sold in major retailers across 50 states and now internationally. On a mission to create a Better Pop for a Better world, JonnyPops are made with simple ingredients and each stick includes an inspiring message, a hallmark of the brand, reflecting the values of the company by placing kindness at the center of every pop.

Since 2016 JonnyPops has participated in Food Export’s Market Access Program (MAP) funded Branded Program, they have been featured in the U.S. FoodLink Featured Products section, attended Buyers Missions, Focused Trade Missions, and has products listed in the Online Product Catalog.

Food Export uses funding from the Market Access Program (MAP) to help America’s small businesses increase their exports of food and agricultural products. As these exports increase, these small businesses are creating jobs and improving the strength and stability of our agricultural economy. Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast are non-profit organizations that work in collaboration with their member state departments of agriculture and the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. They offer a wide range of programs and services that help boost America’s agricultural exports.

Using Food Export-Midwest’s Market Access Program (MAP) funded Branded Program has helped contribute to U.S. Dairy Trade, Inc.’s export success to China. Since 2013 they have participated in the Branded Program to build brand interest and gain market share in China. With the continued growing demand for dairy products in China, and with U.S. Dairy Trade’s familiarity with how to supply the market, they have been able to grow their exports to market consistently for the past nine years.

The Hartland, Wisconsin dairy supplier uses their allocated funds to attend the Food and Hotel China trade show in Shanghai, the Bakery China Show in Shanghai, and the Food and Hospitality China Show in Guangzhou. In recent years they have focused on promoting their AmeriDairy private label dairy brand.

This past January, U.S. Dairy Trade, Inc. reported gaining $50,000 in export sales in part from using the Branded Program to promote their products in China. This is a 150% increase in sales from last year. The Wisconsin dairy checkoff is also projecting to complete $1,000,000 more in sales over the next twelve months with their 5 new established agent relationships and 5 new foreign buyer contacts.

U.S. Dairy Trade, Inc. was created by farmers to build trust and sales of dairy. Since 2008, the U.S. dairy industry has been working to be a leader in dairy sustainability. Per information on the U.S. Dairy website, “U.S. dairy was the first in the food agricultural sector to conduct a full life cycle assessment at a national level which showed it contributes just 2% of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. As of 2007, producing a gallon of milk uses 90% less land and 65% less water, with a 63% smaller carbon footprint than in 1944. Thanks to increasingly modern and innovative dairy farming practices, the environmental impact of producing a gallon of milk in 2017 shrunk significantly, requiring 30% less water, 21% less land and a 19% smaller carbon footprint than it did in 2007. That’s the same as the amount of carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere by half a million acres of U.S. Forest.” You can read more about U.S. Dairy Trade’s sustainability efforts on its website.

Since 2013, U.S. Dairy Trade, Inc. has participated in Food Export’s Branded Program, while also participating in the Online Product Catalog.

Although the pandemic dropped sales by 58% in 2021, because of the company’s use of the 50% cost reimbursement through the Branded Program offered by the Food Export-Midwest, their distributor was able to continue the promotional and marketing activities that were planned for 2021.

Using their available Agricultural Trade Promotion Program (ATP) funding made available through Food Export-Midwest’s Branded Program helped the Ohio supplier increase brand awareness with strong marketing strategies. Nature’s One used their allocated funding to complete marketing plans in China advertising in newspapers, on billboards, television, radio, and social media. The company also participated in trade seminars, shipped freight samples, completed in-store promotions, and made package/label modifications. In a time when the market and economy was unpredictable it was crucial to have the 50% reimbursement available with the ATP funded Food Export Branded Program.

This is certainly one of the major contributing factors that assisted the Ohio company to build a brand new organic-dedicated manufacturing facility locally in Ohio with state-of-the-art production equipment. Now Nature’s One can create more jobs, purchase more U.S. made ingredients and supplies and enhance the U.S. economy.

According to Priscilla Berger, Global Sales Director of Nature’s One, “Our experiences participating in Food Export-Midwest programs over the years have always been very positive, productive, and beneficial. The various tools and programs are easy to use, and the staff is always professional, courteous, and efficient. The financial support the Branded Program provides has helped market our products in foreign markets in a much effective manners especially when we need to build a new U.S. brand in a very competitive market. All in all, Food Export is an essential part of our business strategy for export so we can expand our U.S. made products in foreign markets properly and effectively which in turn benefits our U.S. economy as well.”

Nature’s One is a producer of all natural and organic baby formula, food, and beverages for the retail and medical sectors.

The main purpose of the seminars is to increase the awareness among the trade of the vast opportunities to work with small and medium size U.S. value-added processed food companies. The seminars were held throughout the month of December in 2020 in the cities of Shenyang, Xi’an and Hangzhou.

Shenyang is the provincial capital and the largest city of Liaoning Province in northeastern China. With over eight million in population, Shenyang is an important hub of Northeast China. The entire Northeast is one of China’s fastest-growing regions and it is an emerging market for U.S. foods in recent years.

Xi’an, located in Northwest China, is the capital of Shaanxi Province and one of the oldest cities in China. Economic growth in the region boomed in the past several decades, to which Xi’an is now the most populous city in the region and was named one of the seven main emerging mega cities in China in 2019.

Hangzhou is one of the fastest-growing cities thanks to it being a cultivating hub for e-commerce companies. Its proximity to Shanghai, an hour away by high-speed train, attracts many business owners in Shanghai to relocate or establish branch offices in Hangzhou, it also allows the development of a comprehensive logistics system, with the latest products and trends in Shanghai to spread quickly in Hangzhou.

Attendees in all three cities were greeted by Food Export’s China In-Market Representative. Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, no Food Export staff members from the States were able to travel to China to present in person at the seminar. Tim Hamilton, Executive Director/CEO of Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast, welcomed and thanked the Chinese trade via a pre-recorded video message. After his welcome remarks, the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service Agriculture Trade Office (ATO) Directors in Shenyang and Xi’an thanked the attendees for their support of Food Export and U.S. agricultural products and expressed their optimism regarding the future for U.S. exports to China. Food Export’s In-Market Representatives, provided a detailed, comprehensive presentation on Food Export’s programs and services, including the Branded Program and Trade Lead system through which importers can connect with export-ready U.S. Suppliers in the Midwest and Northeast USA.

A total of 126 buyers and importers attended the seminars in Shenyang (44), Xi’an (42) and Hangzhou (40). The seminars have successfully resulted in 17 trade leads submitted to Food Export to date.  With a rekindled interest in purchasing from the U.S., the trader seminar allowed Food Export to introduce the programs and services to Chinese buyers to educate and attract them to participate in future activities. Feedback from the attendees in all three cities indicated that they were glad to learn about the variety of programs that Food Export offers to importers. Many attendees have expressed interest in participating in Food Export activities in the future.

China Seminars

This free educational opportunity was made possible by the USDA Agricultural Trade Promotion Program (ATP) which was set in place in early 2019 to help mitigate the damage caused by retaliatory tariffs on U.S. agricultural products.

In May of 2019, CaramelCrisp LLC dba Garrett Popcorn Shops®, located in Chicago, Illinois, attended Food Export-Midwest’s Sweets & Snacks Buyers Mission, a program designed to bring international buyers together with U.S. based suppliers, where they had a successful meeting with a buyer from China. Just a few month’s after this meeting, the buyer started exporting Garrett’s proprietary popcorn kernels and ingredients to the market.

Garrett Popcorn Shops and the Shanghai-based Chinese buyer, representing one of the largest high-end grocery stores in China, completed a three-week pilot project in Shanghai where a Garrett Popcorn Shop kiosk was installed in the store to offer fresh handmade gourmet Garrett Popcorn to excited Chinese customers.

According to Mark Staublin, Senior Vice President of Business Development at Garrett Popcorn Shops, “As we at Garrett often experience, the brand awareness of the Garrett Popcorn brand precedes introductions. This was exactly what happened as the buyer already knew of Garrett’s premium stature in the snack industry, its high quality and great taste. These qualities as well as the aspirational character of the brand, made Garrett quite suitable for the Chinese market. Meeting at the Buyers Mission was the perfect way to establish a relationship with this important Chinese retailer.  Due to the success of this pilot program, we are very optimistic about future business in the region.”

CaramelCrisp LLC dba Garrett Popcorn Shops also participates in Food Export’s Branded Program and Online Product Catalog, as well as Food Export’s educational webinars and seminars.

Garrett Popcorn Shops offers handcrafted, artisanal popcorn in eight countries and on the garrettpopcorn.com website.
