Jumpstart Your Product Export Sales to South Korea

South Korea has proven to be an appealing and profitable market for U.S. companies for many years. USDA’s Agricultural Trade Office (ATO) in Seoul, reports that the U.S. is the leading exporter of agricultural products to Korea with a 24% market share. While total U.S. bulk agricultural exports to Korea dipped in 2019, exports of consumer-oriented products such as meat, dairy, and processed products continue to grow.

Despite escalated competition from export-oriented competitors, consumer-oriented American products continued to lead the expansion of the export market in Korea, which reflected Korean consumers’ increased demand for better value, quality and diversity. The Korea-United States Free Trade Agreement, (KORUS) implemented in 2012, coupled with on-going evolvement of the Korean food market, should generate greater export opportunities for American products in Korea in the coming years.

U.S. Food & Agricultural Product Imports to South Korea, By the Numbers

  • U.S. Consumer-Oriented Foods – US$4.7 billion (2020)
  • U.S. Processed Foods – US$2.9 billion (2020)

In March 2021, Karl Brown, President of Pretzel Pete, Inc., received a trade lead from Food Export-Northeast from a buyer in South Korea who was interested in the pretzel product line, Pretzel Pete. Food Export’s Trade Lead program/service is a free service for suppliers registered with Food Export that connects international buyers with suppliers distributing products they are specifically searching for. Food Export’s network of In-Market Representatives and the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) offices meet with qualified buyers throughout the year and provide leads to Food Export. Food Export then searches their Online Product Catalog for the products specified in the received Trade Lead and share the matched information with the supplier and the buyer.

After receiving interested in Pretzel Pete products in 2021, Mr. Brown continued dialogue and correspondence with the buyer and, throughout 2022, sent six containers of pretzel balls to South Korea, at a total of $575,937.

According to Mr. Brown, “We were thrilled to receive this new business in Korea. This business has continued beyond the initial order of six containers and has proven to be steady ongoing business that has been most welcome in these otherwise uncertain times.”

Pretzel Pete, Inc. is a manufacturer and distributor of gourmet pretzel products in the specialty and gourmet retail segments. While previously under a different company name, this Hatboro, Pennsylvania supplier has participated in Food Export programs since 1999 taking advantage of the Branded Program, In-Store Promotion events, Buyers Missions, and the Online Product Catalog.

Due to travel restrictions with the COVID-19 pandemic, IQBAR’s nutrition bars were displayed by Food Export’s In-Market Representative at the show which led to meetings with over 50 distributors, importers, retailers, etc. Seoul Food was the first official activity for new-to-market IQBAR in South Korea.  Projected sales resulting from IQBAR’s participation in Food Export’s Showcase are expected to total at least $200,000 in the first year and more than double the following year.

Chris Beels, Director of Sales at IQBAR, commented, “We are thankful to have access to Food Export and its team of dedicated international trade experts. The creative use of virtual international trade missions, during a time when international travel is difficult due to the COVID-19 pandemic, enables our company to continue to have the platform to pursue our international export goals.”  IQBAR’s Korean Representative, Jun Taek Lim, added, “Despite significantly decreased number of visitors due to COVID, we were able to initiate talking to 50 plus distributors, importers, manufacturers, retailers, journalists, and student groups as well, building momentum, which would not have been possible without your help.  Thank you very much.”

Based in Boston, Massachusetts, IQBAR launched their low-carb, plant-based protein bar benefiting both brain and body in 2017.  Their keto, paleo, vegan, gluten/GMO-free, low-sugar nutrition bars are offered in seven flavors (chocolate sea salt, peanut butter chip, almond butter chip, matcha chai, banana nut, wild blueberry, and lemon blueberry).  Targeting exports to Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Mexico, Canada, Australia, Chile, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Sweden markets, IQBAR focuses on retail and e-commerce business as well as brokers/distributors serving retail partners and B2B channels.

Dr. Gary founded Best Breed Inc. with his “Common Sense Nutrition” philosophy, promoting the healthiest pet food possible while disregarding typical marketing and cost control techniques used by other large pet food companies.  This high-quality product has been increasingly popular in South Korea, where Best Breed Inc. has continued their growth in the market through successful brand promotion via Food Export-Midwest’s Branded Program.

Since 2011, Best Breed Inc. has participated in Food Export-Midwest’s Branded Program. They have most recently used the program to gain brand awareness for their pet food and pet care products in South Korea and Taiwan. Using their allocated funding to complete online advertising and social media plans, complete in-store promotions, make label/package modifications, produce, and distribute promotion and literature materials helped the Ohio supplier earn substantial new sales to South Korea and Taiwan. With these sales Best Breed also projects to complete more considerable sales to these two markets over the next twelve months.

Per Levi Wittenmyer of Best Breed, “I cannot say enough good stuff about the folks I have worked with at Food Export. The level of service has greatly influenced how often we use the program and without a doubt has contributed to its success in driving our export sales.”
